I write out my meal plan so I can then make a shopping list to ensure I have all ingredients needed. I prep and prepare anything I can 1 to 2 days in advance so not all the work is the day of.

  2. Emma Walpole says:

make a list and calendar of all events/parties and last days (teacher gifts) and when entertaining, keep it simple, only a few different apps but lots of them.

  3. Sarah Feddern says:

    1) Remember that it’s a holiday. Holidays should be fun and there is only one person that can make it fun . . . you!!!!
    2) Whenever possible keep it simple. When stress starts creeping in, it’s a good sign that you’re making it more complicated then it needs to be. Write down your to do list and remember the three “D”s (do, don’t do, delegate).

  4. Kelly Haylock says:

Make as many things ahead of time as you can so you can focus on visiting rather than cooking! If people ask if they can help, let them, entertaining is hard work and its always nice to share big jobs!

  5. carla d says:

I make lists for everything; cards, presents, cooking, etc…and I also keep extra gifts around the home just in case (wine, chocolate, etc…)

  6. Lindsay L says:

I make a list of every detail in advance and like to have it completed a day before any event so that day doesn’t seem so stressful. I also keep the food simple and prep everything in advance (chopped and measured) so all I have to do is throw it all together.

  7. Candace P. says:

Potluck is a great idea, we cook the turkey & everyone else brings the trimmings. Also buy presents on sale throughout the year & keep a presents closet/storage. It’s great for the “whoops we forgot that person gift” or hostess gifts when you are invited out.

  8. Joce Lyne says:

i bake goodies ahead of time and freeze them…gives me more free time to enjoy company…
i let the kids help with setting the table and cleaning up..they love that 🙂

  9. katrina says:

I always make homemade treats and have them ready to share. Always have. The fridge stocked with Christmas cheer!

  10. Sandra K says:

My holiday entertaining tips are to use disposable cutlery and dishes and have a Glad garbage bag and recycle bag station for ease of clean up . Set up a drink station away from the food prep area to reduce traffic around the stove…keep it simple 🙂

  11. Lisa Neutel says:

keep it simple and less stressful..
have fun and enjoy your friends and family, these moments dont last forever

  12. Anna-marie says:

Prepare as much food as possible in advance! This will allow you to spend more time with your guests, and less time in the kitchen 🙂
Keep it simple! It diesnt have to be ellaborate to be wonderful

  13. Maureen A says:

During Holidays I try to keep it simple, menu would be the dishes that are known to be a hit. Make sure I have a checklist of the things I need to prepare, so I won’t have to stressed about thingking if I forgot something & have to ran to the store last minute.

  14. Angelina H says:

You should always use disposable dishes and cutlery; easy clean up. Make a list of what you need to buy still; check it twice to make sure you have everything. Have a variety of different homemade snacks and veggies. That way you have something for everyone; be it picky eaters or people with allergies.

  15. cathy canton says:

Make as much ahead of time as you can and Clean up as you go so you are not left with a huge mess in the kitchen when unexpected guests show up

  16. gwen says:

#1) KEEP IT SIMPLE! People LOVE to snack so serve some easy finger foods like fancy potato wedges, quiche, and cheese and meats. These will not only taste yummy they will be easy to eat and fill everyone up.
#2) Have a small table dedicated to kids. Serve fun and tasty little kid sized snacks. Have most of them in their own container (festival munchy mix in their own cup) to cut down on mess.

  17. Natalie says:

Set up everything you can the night before – particularly if you have to move furniture – and do as much food prep as you can in advance.
Add simple but festive touches like marshmallow snowmen (skewered marshmallows decorated with royal icing) to up the fun without adding too much extra work.

  18. Most important – keep it simple & prep in advance- peoplejust want company – not fancy
I always make lists – that way I don’t forget anything & makes it easy

  19. Carlotta says:

    1) If yoy will be serving alcohol make sure everyone will have safe rides home.
2)Set up a bag for can / bottle recyling if you are offering beverages in these containers.

Guest tip – If there are dishes being done offer to help even if you have helped the last 5 years and others have never helped. Can be a nice quit time to visit the others doing dishes.

  20. Cassandra Eastman says:

Tip 1: Have crafts or games for the kids to do to keep them occupied
Tip 2: Keep the food simple so you can enjoy the party as well. Do a potluck or try finger foods!

  21. Marla says:

Have lots of beverages on hand. Always keep frozen cookie dough handy so you can pop them in the oven just beore guests arrive 🙂

  22. Kristy says:

1> Stock the freezer. I start this in early fall to get ready for all the appy’s and baked goods I’ll need. OR go to a preprepared meal service place and stock up on their menu items.
2> Take a little extra time off work – holidays are supposed to be enjoyable!

  23. Tara Tremblett says:

This year I’m going to keep it simple prepare what I can in advance and have each of my guests bring something!

  24. Rhonda says:

Prepare as much as you can in advance. Choose a signature drink to serve and then provide wine and beer so you don’t have to stock a full bar. And no matter what….enjoy the time even if things don’t go as planned

  25. Tamara D says:

I like to keep it simple, plan ahead with lists and start early with it all so come the day of entertaining there is very little to do before guests arrive and I can enjoy the day! (It’s not easy!)

  26. Melissa Finn says:

    1) Try and cook/bake ahead so you have time to enjoy yourself

    2) Have an activity or craft to keep kids occupied so parents can enjoy themselves.

  27. Lori L says:

My top 2 holiday entertaining tips are to be prepared well in advance! Know what you’re making & buy ALL ingredients early! Nothing worse than going to pick up a turkey last minute & seeing the empty freezer bin with the .99c/lb sale sign knocked over!

Also, take time to relax & enjoy some time with your company! All too often we get caught up preparing, serving, cleaning, fussing – why are we doing all of this if we can’t enjoy!?

    Happy (stress-free) holidays to all!

  28. Christina says:

Always have an extra bottle of wine hidden and keep it simple.

  29. Chelsea R says:

    1) Always have fresh towels on the guest bed, just in case people need to unexpectedly stay the night
    2) Keep a stash of generic pre-wrapped gifts on hand (kids Christmas books, family games, holiday CDs, specialty teas etc) with a post it on top indicating what’s inside. If you receive an unexpected invitation, or a friend surprises you with a gift, you’ll have something ready to go.

  30. Angie says:

    1. Always write out a plan for food and prepare shopping list from that plan – that way you won’t miss anything that you need.
    2. Always have the preparation work done an hour before people are to arrive – there will always be 1 that arrives early and you don’t want to be running around stressed finishing up things while your guests are arriving.

  31. Jeannie says:

Prep as much as you can the night or days before, such as chopping any of the food, laying out the table settings, prepping any cold appetizers.

Set a table for the kids, both for food and crafts. The food will allow them to help themselves to what they like to eat and the crafts will keep the entertained.

  32. Cheryl Morreale says:

Buy 2L bottles of pop when they are on sale so when it’s time for the party, you will have pop & at a discount. Also make a list of what you need to buy so that you don’t go overboard.

  33. I like to pre-plan on excel spreadsheet – Christmas cards, shopping list, guest list, etc…
Make it simple as possible – meals does not have to be fancy, plan meals you can make quickly so you have time to do other things.

  34. Leanne b says:

    – pull out all your serving dishes in advance and it post it’s on what goes in them – that way people can help you
    – lists!!!
