There is more than one way to be a girl or a boy, but you wouldn’t know it from the kids’ clothing aisles in most stores. For girls and boys whose interests and aspirations don’t fit neatly into gender stereotypes (and for parents who hope they won’t), Jill and Jack Kids offers a breath of fresh air. They’re launching on Kickstarter May 19th with a line of brightly-coloured shirts with positive messages that kids of all genders will love to wear. On a recent trip to a big box store, I noticed a onesie with the slogan “single and loving it!” If we want the next generation to grow up striving to be kind, capable and confident rather than popular and sexy, we need to be mindful of the messages we’re sending our kids from day one.
