Diono Car Seat Review: Radian RXT

Car Seat. Size. Safety. What to buy. Best Price. Highest Safety Rating. When it comes to purchasing a car seat, there’s plenty of options for young families, with a lot of choices out on the market.

This spring, we were fortunate enough to have one of the Diono Radian RXT car seats with us for our 8 week Travelling Tot programs. We ‘nicknamed’ our car seat ‘Dino’ and took ‘him’ out on adventures with our classes. One week to the animal farm, one week to music class, one week crafts, etc. it was a busy schedule for ‘Dino’.

The benefit of having ‘Dino’ come out to our class was that we could have our ‘Mommy Connection Discussion’ around car seats. As many of you know, one of the most trusted sources for information on a product, most times is the referral of other Moms. Since ‘Dino’ was at all our classes, it was a great opportunity to chat about car seats and the Radian RXT. Here’s our review of the Diono Radian RXT as well as feedback from Moms in our spring group.

Feedback from our Moms:

* Fantastic safety rating! One of the highest safety ratings on the market!

* Easy to install, nice and narrow so you don’t lose too much space (or can fit multiple car seats comfortably). Good neck support and kid seems to enjoy sitting in it which is great. Also grows with you!

* We actually have both the Radian and the Britax. We (and our son) definitely prefers the Diono over the Britax.

* Easy to install, likes the fit of multiple car seats in the car.

* Love how it fits three car seats across (multiple Moms commented on this)! So if you have 3 kids and want a car seat that accommodates three easily, this is a car seat you MUST check out!

* Sleek size, fit and comfort for kids in the car.

* Could use more padding around the seat area.

* Heavy base and found it (one of our Moms) tough to install.

Personal Review (Director):

My husband and I bought the Radian RXT car seat in 2013 for our daughter. When we did our research our primary focus was on safety rating. I didn’t care about the look, or feel, or comfort because I just wanted her to be safe in the car. We still have the Radian and have recently purchased a second one for our son who was born in 2015. Overall, I believe we made the right purchase for our family.

My daughter is now 3.5 years old it’s great because she can get in and out of it very easily. She’s getting old enough to do up the chest buckle and will soon be able to do the base one too. It’s easy to clean and she can do activities in the car without restrictive sides. It’s not the most comfortable when it comes to taking a nap (for her), but the new one we bought has the sides that have more padding so there’s always that option. Plus she can grow with it, so we don’t have to invest (as it is an investment) in another car seat (huge bonus)!

We do like the Radian car seat, but there’s a few drawbacks. If you want to travel with it, you can but it’s very, very heavy and not the easier to take out and move around. It does fold for travelling but it is very heavy. We purchased the Radian RXT back in 2013 so the seat area wasn’t as padded as it is now. I am not sure it comes with a travel bag, but if you did pack it up, I would invest in a good car seat travel bag so that it doesn’t get damaged en route.

Overall, we are very happy with this purchase (twice) because the safety rating can’t be beat and I feel confident with my kids and their safety in the car.
