TOP 5 THINGS I WISH I KNEW WHEN I WAS PREGNANT

September 15, 2014

After having 2 kiddos in the last 3 years, I haven’t really had a whole bunch of “free time” to think back on both my pregnancies in detail (heck , I have trouble thinking about what I did last week !) but I was chatting to a good friend recently who was patiently waiting for her first baby to arrive, and we got talking about what I wished I had known/done when I was pregnant…

#1- You don’t need ALL the gear RIGHT away! Our first daughter didn’t sleep in her crib until she was 5 months old. But do you know the wrath I laid upon my husband in all my pregnant glory, bossing him to GET IT DONE a month before she was due! Do you know where the Exersaucer went I insisted we needed BEFORE she was born? In the garage for the first 7 months! (Then she hated it anyways!)

#2- Instead of focusing on the stuff we needed for baby, I wished my partner and I would have focused a little more on us, and enjoyed the time (oh the sweet quiet time) together.

#3- Secondhand goods are A-OK! Try before you shell out for the newest model of anything! Try the swing your cousin has in her basement first, with your little one. She may hate it (like my first) or spend his first 2 months in it (like my second!). Troll your local Facebook swap groups, Kijiji or garage sales! The best thing about baby stuff is it’s often only used for such a short time, you’ll find stuff in EEUC! (Extremely Excellent Used Condition for my non-bargin hunters)!

#4- Bask in the attention and niceties that the general public (usually) bestows on a pregnant woman. Take that roomy seat on the LRT, accept a cookie from the barista, if your boss tells you to go home and out your feet up, DO IT! Because everyone loves a new baby, but most of the time, it’s usually JUST about the new baby, and not the new momma!

#5- You can be prepared up the Hooha, but pregnancy and babies are unpredictable things. As hard as it may seem at the time, try not to sweat the small stuff, accept advice/ideas/options with a grain of salt, and enjoy every moment of the journey (cankles , weird cravings, anxiety and all)!
