What Is Mommy Connections?

What Is Mommy Connections?

January 16, 2012

“What is Mommy Connections?”  I get asked this all the time.  This website has a great description which includes this:

‘Mommy Connections introduces you to programs and services within your community.  Our classes provide a unique learning opportunity as well as a fun way to bond with your child and other moms in a social environment.’

That is exactly what it is!  To further explain, once a week, for 8 weeks we meet for 90 minutes.  We all gather together, lay our baby blankets on the floor and get nice and comfy.  Little toys around us, diapers, soothers, bottles, breast pads even, burp cloths and cameras, you know all the regular paraphernalia that accommodates a baby.  Each week, there is some sort of “introduction”, whether it be a game to win a door prize, what your baby did that week, etc etc.  (And if you are anything like me, you spend that time chatting quietly to other moms beside you while still participating in the discussion.) What I love is that one mom might say that her child started rolling, and we all “awwww” at that comment.  Another mom might say that she hasn’t slept in 3 days. This either makes some of us feel truly happy that its not us, or truly happy that we aren’t the only ones who aren’t sleeping.  We are all going through the same things.
Okay, so after the introductions, we meet our first presenter.  This could be anyone, an expert on baby wearing, post natal fitness, yoga, lactation consultant, dentist, one of the many presenters we will see. They will then talk about thier product or service, what they do, what they offer, the importance of it, a demo, provide literature, sometimes a little gift, and then have a Q & A session. Done, this usually repeats with a new topic and a new presenter.

After this, the moms spend some time collecting their hoards of baby accessories, feeding, changing, bouncing, but most of all chatting.  THAT is what I love so much about this program.  Some moms are there more for the educational aspect than just the social, although I think most like a good combination of education and social.  We all have a common bond; we all have a baby.  Many of us are first time parents, but there are those professionals among us who have more than 1, something the singletons can’t even yet imagine. It really doesn’t take long before we start making play dates before the next week.

So, to sum it up, for 90 minutes, once a week for 8 weeks, we have presenters come in, usually 2  a week, and discuss topics relevant to moms and babies.  We connect with eachother while learning about businesses and programs in our community. Moms, babies and communities connecting together all in an educational and social environment.

One of my favourite days is when a professional photographer comes in and takes photos of us moms with our babies.  A couple weeks later, we get the photo, can you believe it, a real printed photo.  Most of mine don’t make it past being uploaded from the camera to the computer!

As I have mentioned before, I have attended 2 post natal sessions and 1 toddlers session.  All 3 were fantastic.  I learned so much at each one and met several different women.  I have some amazing friends through Mommy Connections.  I reguarly see these women for play dates, and sometimes we all leave our child with Dad or Grandma and head out for dinner.

Mommy Connections is all over Edmonton and the surrounding areas.  Please go to the specific websites to register. For a North Session, please click here for more information.
