Mommy Review: BRICA Push to Close Extending Metal Gate by Munchkin

I was given the opportunity to review the Brica Extending Metal Gate by Munchkin, which is an aesthetically pleasing, fairly lightweight and modern-looking gate. Having worked as a childcare director for several years, this product was unlike the usual plastic baby gates we used in our center and I was excited to try it in my home with my first baby.

My favourite aspect of this product, hands down, is the modern and stylish look of the gate (this is what sold me!). Being a mom living in a small home who does not like to clutter her only adult space with baby products, the gate was exactly what I needed to separate my family room from the rest of our living space. And it fit in quite nicely! Nevertheless, my husband did not feel the same way. His main concern was that our wobbling toddler would hurt himself on the metal of the gate – to date he has not yet done that. And he did NOT like the installation process; it was quite frustrating. What I observed throughout the installation was that the instructions were not for everyone; they contained pictures versus written explanations. We were expecting a little more written language as this is a safety product, but the link in the instruction manual to the online videos was quite helpful and made the whole process smoother.

We frequently take the gate down, as we don’t like having it up as a permanent fixture in our home, and this was really the only con that we have experienced thus far. If you like a gate that you can move from room to room, like those of us living in a bungalow with tenants in our basement do, this wouldn’t be a great first choice, but for something that stays in place to protect your baby from entering the basement or tumbling down the stairs permanently, it works great. That being said, the walk-through function of the gate is fantastic as it saves you the hassle of climbing over it or putting it up and down to get in and out of a room.

Lastly, as we live in an older home with non-standard doorways and hallways, and very uneven walls, this gate was versatile and able to fit in some spaces where we had no luck with other baby gates. It can be fairly narrow and extend to quite a wide space as well. It is easy to open and close for adults but definitely difficult for babies and toddlers to figure out  because of the two-step process, which makes it conveniently safe.

Overall, despite a bit of a frustrating installation, the Brica Metal Gate by Munchkin has a subtle way of fitting in with the look of any home, is easy to use on a daily basis, and is an extremely sturdy permanent-style of baby gate that I would definitely recommend to parents, or even dog owners looking to keep their pets contained to one space!

This gate is available at Babies R Us for $59.99. It is exclusive to Babies R Us and just launched in late April.
