BioGaia® ProTectis® – Review

This review was written by Britt T., mother to a 9- month-old

Since starting solids at 6 months, my daughter’s poops have become more irregular and she’s had some constipation issues. I hate seeing her uncomfortable like that, so I was thrilled when I offered the opportunity to try BioGaia® ProTectis®. After looking at the ingredient list, I felt comfortable with trying BioGaia® ProTectis®. It is free of many common allergens, including dairy, gluten, and nuts, making it easier to pinpoint food reactions, as we are still introducing new foods.

Within a week of using the product, my daughter had noticeably less stomache distress. I’m happy to report that her poops are becoming more regular (I know, moms talk about poop a lot) and she has less constipation. I’m thrilled that something so simple can make such a huge difference.

I would recommend this product to any parent looking for a safe, quality probiotic. We plan to continue using this product daily to keep our daughter’s gut health optimal.

Here’s some extra information about the product:

BioGaia® ProTectis® is an evidence-based probiotic that’s been proven to soothe these common tummy issues in newborns and older children:

Even in Alberta in late November, a sunshade is a must. Luckily I was given the opportunity to review the Brica Sun Safety Shade by Munchkin.

brica-sunshade-twoInstallation was straightforward. The Sun Safety™ Shade is equipped with both window clips and suctions cups, and simple instructions for both are included on the packaging. I had no trouble installing the shade using the window clips. I simply rolled down the window about 6 inches and attached the clips, which adjust according to the shape of your window. It did however, take several tries to get all the suction cups to stick without the window clips, which may be more problematic in winter months. Once the clips were installed, I simply pulled the bottom suction cup down gently and secured it to your window.

The sun shade has a button that retracts, enabling it to stay installed in the vehicle when not in use, which is a bonus. Simply press the button and it retracts back to the top. It does retract with some force, so I would not recommend allowing your children to play with the button.

brica-sun-shadeThe fabric mesh of the shade provides sufficient sun shade and heat protection, but because of the size and shape of our windows, it wasn’t wide enough to provide full coverage. This meant that my daughter was still squinting at times throughout our drive.

The Sun Shade is equipped with a White Hot® indicator that turns white when the car is too hot. This feature is fantastic for hot summer days.

Overall, I would recommend this product to anyone looking for an easy-to-use sunshade that offers peace of mind and sun protection for your little ones. A set of two Brica® White Hot® Sun Safety™ Shades by Munchkin retails for $13.00 online.

Finding quality childcare can be a cumbersome and exhausting process; the back-to-work deadline for many mothers is made exponentially more stressful because of it. Knowing your options ahead of time can help ease this stress and make heading back to work a more seamless process.

I had the opportunity to visit and review BrightPath’s Northeast Edmonton Child Care Center last year, and I was impressed.  Each room was carefully crafted for its intended inhabitants, with rooms for older babies, toddlers, preschoolers and after school care. I also loved that this center had a full-time nutritionist making fresh meals daily.

All BrightPath staff are required to possess a current criminal record check, first aid certification and go through BrightPath’s training program.

BrightPath has their own curriculum created through in-depth research into early childhood learning and growth. All activities in the program are hands-on and child-lead. It recognizes that all children are unique and learn in their own way – as a former teacher, I love this!

If you are interested in learning more about a BrightPath Child Care Center near you, arrange a tour at the location of your choice and see firsthand what the center has to offer.

When SPUD Edmonton dropped off my brand new Breville Juice Fountain Elite, I was thrilled! My daughter and I immediately began to open the box, removing the parts and prepping them to wash. With each part I washed I started to feel overwhelmed. What if I couldn’t figure out how to use it? What if I couldn’t put it together without my husband’s help? What if clean up was too complex? I finished washing the new parts and, using the instruction booklet, began to put it together. To my surprise, less than 30 seconds later, the beautiful machine was together, in all its glory.

the juicer

We wasted no time making our first juice and chose a recipe from the Instruction Booklet: Apple, Carrot and Celery Juice. I quickly washed all my ingredients (and cut the apples into smaller chunks, but I’m pretty sure the machine will literary sort all of that for you) and added some ginger. We pressed the on button and began dropping carrots, celery, ginger and apples into the Feed Shoot and pushing the food down with the Food Pusher. The machine is loud (of course) and extremely powerful. It juices vegetables and fruits in what feels like nanoseconds and filters all the “unjuiceable” parts into the pulp container (on the left). In less than thirty seconds we had more than two cups of fresh juice! And my toddler’s reaction during the whole process was priceless: she squealed with delight each time we put a new fruit or veggie in the shoot. And when she tried the juice her response was “mmm yummy!”

My initial hesitation when opening the box was that it would be too complex for me to put together and would take too much time washing, drying and reassembling. Not the case at all. Once your juice is finished and you are ready to clean it’s a matter of a few minutes. I simply empty the Pulp Container (into your garbage or even better, your compost) and then rinse everything with water. That’s it. The only part that requires scrubbing (a special scrubber is provided) is the Nutri Disc which does the hard work of juicing your fruits and vegetables. I place everything in the drying rack on my counter and reassemble when everything has dried.

I’m really looking forward to spring and summer when even more BC and AB local fruits and veggies will be available through SPUD and at local farmers’ markets. I’m also excited to keep trying new juices, coming up with my own recipes and getting more comfortable (and braver) at trying new juices. If you ever have leftover juice (especially ones with vegetables) they are a great base for smoothies to replace water or other kinds of milks – especially if vegetable juices aren’t your favourite, it’s a great way to get more veggies in you!

My only warning would be that once you’ve made real, fresh organic juice, you will simply not be able to go back to the store-bought, processed kind.
