I’ve been lucky. Fortunate. Able to afford. I grew up in a middle class neighbourhood, my father worked while my mother stayed home and raised three children. My parents never bought me a car for my birthday, or sent me on extravagant vacations for March Break, or paid for all my University. Instead they gave us what we needed. What was affordable. And it was enough. We always had enough. And I am forever grateful to my parents that I had a roof over my head, food, clothes and the everyday necessities of life.
Unfortunately not everyone is so fortunate.
That’s another lesson my parents taught me. Give back where ever you can. When ever you can.
Therefore, I would like to share this ‘Gift From The Heart’ because I know there’s people who cannot afford basic dental care. I get it. It’s costly. Going to a dentist for many is a luxury that many cannot afford. So thanks to the generosity of ‘Lifetime Smiles Dental Hygiene Clinic’, this Saturday February 8th, the clinic is open to those who could not otherwise afford basic dental hygiene care.

This is the fourth year Lifetime Smiles Dental Hygiene Clinic has participated. So how did they get involved? We caught up with Sally Lloyd, RDH at Lifetime Smiles Dental Hygiene, to find out more.
“It all started 5 years ago with Bev Woods – Ontario Dental Hygienist and founder of the event – wanted to bring public awareness to the overwhelming number of Ontarian’s unable to afford oral health care.”
Is this just a Calgary based event?
“It’s all across Canada, including Calgary and Claresholm. Gift From The Heart occurring on the same day across the country, brings attention to the fact that despite Canada’s favorable economy there are many for whom the cost of dental care just does not fit into their budget, parents who go without so their children can have treatment, or children who go without basic preventative dental treatment until they end up in the operating room of a children’s hospital having numerous dental procedures carried out under general anesthesia. I am not referring to the cost of root canal treatment or a dental crown, but the cost of basic preventative dental hygiene care. Preventative services promote oral health, prevent more serious dental problems, and are essential to whole body health. Preventative care that dental hygienists specialize in.

What is it like to be apart of an event like this?
This event brings attention to the fact that despite Canada’s favorable economy there are many for whom dental care just does not fit into their budget, or parents who go without so children can have treatment. The dental hygiene preventative services that help achieve a level of oral health, prevent more serious dental problems, and are essential to whole body health.
Everyone in Canada deserves access to care. Just imagine what a toothache feels like..a toothache that keeps you up all night…and now just imagine it is a young child in this kind of pain…we don’t want to. Dental Hygienists want to share the gift of prevention.
