After two plus years of searching for the right house in Calgary at the right price, I am thrilled to share that we finally took the leap and bought a house in the SW. Excitement, nervousness, elation, anxiety, all the emotions came tumbling in at the same time, but we were ready to make the next step in our family journey. Our little family of 4, was finally going to have a place of our own, a place to put down our roots and call home.
Once the reality of the move settled in, the first thing my husband and I decided was that we were going to hire movers. We all remember those days when we would coax our friends into helping us move with the promised pizza and beer afterwards … well those days are gone for us. We love our friends and family and truthfully, I think by hiring movers, our friends and family love us even more for it.
With so much selection and choices when it comes to movers in Calgary and having made a cross country move a few times, I know that moving can be expensive. And finding the right movers at the right price can be a challenge. So I spent some time doing my research and calling around until I found a real family friendly company that met our budget called ‘You Move Me’.
What impressed me from the start was the attention to detail. One of the Calgary owners came out to our condo to do a site survey, give us an estimate and go through the moving process with me. Let me say that you think you don’t have a lot of stuff, only to realize you have a lot of stuff. It was a good start to the moving process as well, because the more stuff you move, the more you pay, so if you can sell, get rid of, give away or throw out you’ll be better off in the long run. The owners advice and tips came in very helpful when packing and getting ready, something I appreciated and helped to save me time and money.
I received an estimate via email quickly and the follow up was great. Their customer service team in Calgary was very thorough in their information about the move, what was covered insurance wise (did you know most moving companies DON’T insure any IKEA furniture … interesting) and what was provided for free (wardrobe boxes so you don’t have to fold and pack your clothes in the closet)!
So we agreed to the estimate and decided to hire ‘You Move Me’ for our big day.
After about a month of packing up slowly room by room, the big day arrived and we thought we were ready to go. What should have been only one truck-load to move our items, turned into two full trucks loads of stuff. (Seriously, I didn’t think we had that much stuff)! But the two man moving team was very prepared and efficient. I did a walk through of all the items we had to move and then I left them to pack it all while I met them at the new house.
Fragile items were wrapped carefully, boxes were packed in the truck with precision and everything was labelled and found it’s way to the right room in our new house. When they arrived to move our boxes and furniture in, they put down moving carpet and made sure our carpets and floors weren’t damaged and or got dirty in the process. (And as a first time home buyer I can tell you I was happy when they left we still had a clean carpet and floor). One month after our move, I am happy to report too, that nothing was broken in the process or damaged (victory)!
One more note – we decided it would be fun to have our close family and friends over for pizza and beer, to celebrate on the first night we were in the house (crazy I know on moving day, but we wanted it to be a special day/night). I had envisioned that we would just celebrate around all the boxes placed neatly in corners in each room and there would be space to eat food and chat. Unfortunately, as with life, things didn’t turn out that way. With two full truck loads, we had around 18 people plus small kids in our new house, with movers still moving our boxes and furniture into the house after 6pm. But the movers were so great, they never complained, they were very efficient and kept moving things in (past people) and getting the job done. (Don’t worry, we gave them pizza too afterwards as they were so great).
So if you’re looking to hire movers, for a reasonable price that specializes in working with families I would check them out. They’re a national company, but locally run and again, they specialize in moving young families like ours. It made a very highly anxious, stressful day, run much smoother.
Thanks to everyone who helped us on that day and to my beautiful sister in law for organizing the pizza/beer portion of the party. She even got this cake to celebrate as we’ve moved into the same neighbourhood. Feels good to be home.
