Back To School Haircut: The Beaners Experience

Back to school time!

For many of the Moms in our Mommy Connections Calgary community, back to school doesn’t mean much other than quieter play places and stores. My children are 4.5 and 2, so my oldest is going into her second year of preschool and while it’s only 3 times a week, it’s still a big deal. She doesn’t require much other than a backpack, warm outdoor clothing (she’s in a nature based preschool) and good runnings shoes/boots. But one thing always seems to go hand in hand with going back to school and that’s a haircut.

There are many places in the city you can go to for a cut, but we’ve been faithful Beaners Fun Cuts For Kids clients since my kids had their first hair cuts. What I loved about the first time experience, was that the stylists acknowledged it was a big deal. My daughter was a year and a half for her first cut and while she really only had whispy, fine hair, our stylist spent the time to talk to me about how her hair is growing, what to do with her hair and how to make the haircut a smoother more enjoyable experience (for us both). My son had wild, crazy, curly hair and he wasn’t about to sit still, let alone have anyone cut it, until he realized he could sit on my lap and watch TV. They wrapped up both their first time experiences with a certificate commemorating the experience and you get an envelope with their little precious locks. Good experience all around!

Little kids or bigger ones, Beaners know how to make the experience fun. Earlier this week we took my daughter to get her ‘back to school’ haircut at Beaners. Along with friendly staff that understand children, they have unique chairs (bears, trucks, jeeps, elephants) they can choose to sit on/in during their cut. They have TV’s and family friendly movies on because sometimes it’s nice to have a distraction, so the stylists can do their work. And when kids are done, they have a ball pit, yes you read that right a ball pit, they can play in after their cut. (Side note: My daughter begged to have her hair cut when I took my son once, so that she could play in the ball pit).

For girls, they have options too! We always usually add on a braid with coloured hair weaved into it and or some glitter gel. This time we did a front braid, gel and beads. Not sure about other Moms with girls, but this made my daughters day! I also learned they do undo’s for graduations, dance concerts, weddings, anything you might need special for kids hair do’s, they can do it! Plus they also do adult cuts!

Another reason this salon stands out from other family ones, is their work with autistic children. If you have a child who is autistic or know a child with autism, the hair cutting experience can be a challenging one. Beaners stylists are truly amazing working with these awesome kids. Whether they cut their hair in a chair, on the floor, standing up, walking, in the back room, they will work with you to find the best way to do it. The objective is to make the experience a positive one, so between the parents and the stylist they find a strategy that works.
