The first tooth in a baby’s mouth is an exciting milestone. It is also a time when many moms will have questions.
When should I bring my child to their first dental appointment?
A first tooth usually appears around six months old. It is important to bring your child to the dentist within six months when their first tooth comes in or by the age of one year. This visit generally is brief but is the most crucial visit for parents and the baby in their dental journey.
What’s the benefit of an early dental exam?
Dental caries (commonly known as cavities) can start as early as the first tooth comes in. Through the professional eyes of dentists, they often can see what parents don’t see.
The dentist will review home care and is able to identify any risk factors for dental caries in the child’s home care routine, ex. brushing, diet, oral habits etc. This visit also helps to prepare parents to establish a healthy dental routine at home. If your child is shy or anxious, it is often a good idea for them to start early so that they can build up their trust with the dental staff and build their confidence. As your child grows into a toddler age, accidents happen when he/she tries to master their mobile skills at home or in the playground. By having a dental home for your child, it reduces the stress of parents when a dental emergency happens.
Where should I consider taking my child for their first dental exam?
Parents can ask their own dentist if they are comfortable examining an infant. A certified pediatric dentist is very comfortable seeing infants. Pediatric dentists have an extra two or three years of training with pediatric patients. They typically see children from 0-18yrs old and person’s with special needs.
How is the exam performed?
Based on your child’s age and personality, we may consider using a technique called a “pillow-exam” that allows your child to lay down facing their caregiver while we examine their mouth. If your child is a little older, they may lay down in the dental chair with the help of their parents or on their own!
Does my child get the cleaning for this visit?
Depending on the age, the level of cooperation, and intraoral findings, a dental cleaning is not a must. Your choice of dental provider will be able to make an appropriate recommendation based on your child’s needs. Keeping in mind, the goal is to get your child familiarized with the dental environment, every visit is a success for his/her next dental visit.
