Choosing the Right Child Care Provider

Choosing the Right Child Care Provider

June 4, 2013

We all know how tough it can be to find a quality childcare provider- where do we look to find a place that will care for our children as we would? How do we know they are going to provide exceptional care, attend to the child’s individual needs and help them grow intellectually?

Edleun (Education Learning Universe) is the leading provider of high quality, educational early learning and care across Canada- and Red Deer is lucky enough to hold not one, not two, but three individual Edleun child care centres; Riverside Meadows Learning Centre, Eastview Learning Centre, and Oriole Park Learning Centre. Each of these locations offers care for children ages 6 weeks to 6 years of age, and are open from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm. They offer both part-time and full-time care.

Edleun’s philosophy states, “At Edleun, we know each child is unique. We strive to provide a loving, nurturing, and creative environment for children”. “We aim to provide high quality, developmentally appropriate educational and early learning and care.”

We are lucky enough to work closely with Edleun, and recently had one of their Directors come to one of our Mom & Baby sessions to talk about choosing quality childcare. She provided an explanation for each type of child care option out there including private and licensed day homes, daycare facilities, and in-home care. We were able to discuss the pros and cons to each type of care, and the Moms were given the chance to ask questions about Edleun’s facilities and fees, what is included, and when to begin looking for care. The Director was very attentive and knowledgeable about Red Deer’s child care options, and we were impressed with her explanation of what the Edleun care centres have to offer. Each Mom was provided with a great tote bag filled with descriptions of the many different childcare resources, a childcare Directory for our area, as well as information on subsidy, a child care checklist to help to look for important indicators of quality childcare, as well as detailed information on Edleun’s child care centres.

If you’re starting to think about returning to work, it’s recommended that you begin your child care search 3-6 months in advance of your expected date of return. Some locations may have a waiting list, so get your name on as many lists as you can! It’s important to spend time thinking about what you want in a child care provider- how many children are in their care, the hours of care you’ll need, whether it will be in your home, in someone else’s home, or in a child care center. Look at the prices for each option- in home care varies from $10.00 to $15.00 per hour, day home rates run from $30.00-$40.00 per day, and day care rates average around $45.00 per day. Some locations provide meals and snacks for the children, while some require parents to provide each child’s food. Schedule visits to a variety of locations to get a feel for what each one entails. Observe how the providers interact with the children, and be sure to ask plenty of questions. You will know when a place is the right fit for your family.
