Do You Remember What a Real Strawberry Tastes Like?

My family and I headed out to The Jungle Farm this past weekend to try our hands at strawberry picking – I created a summer bucket list with this particular activity on it and since the Farm was open and we had nothing else on the agenda, we packed up and headed out!

The Jungle Farm is located about 15 minutes southwest of Red Deer, just off the Highway 2 corridor. It’s easy to find and there‘s plenty of parking. We were immediately greeted by the friendly owners who welcomed us, handed us some strawberry baskets and pointed us in the right direction for picking. The kids were so excited! A quick bathroom break, a climb on the wooden play ship, and we headed off to find our row for picking.

As a family with 4 young kiddos who can eat their weight in fruit, we often purchase the imported variety found at local grocers. I took one taste of those sweet, juicy strawberries and vowed to return on my own in the near future with the intent of picking enough berried to freeze and enjoy for the rest of the year. They are so incredibly sweet – this being due to the cool evenings and sunny days of Central Alberta.

It didn’t take long to fill our 3 baskets (what was I thinking – I should have requested at least 5!). The kids absolutely loved lifting the leaves of the strawberry plants to uncover the bright red berries underneath. I actually found it to be kind of addicting!

The prices are very reasonable for what you get out of the whole berry-picking experience. We took home 11 pounds which came out to about $33, and the whole experience was well worth it. It was a great Sunday afternoon activity for our family!
