Outdoor Families in Red Deer

August 1, 2014

Today we joined Pursuit Adventure & Travel for a sample of their Outdoor Families program. I met Danielle and the other families at the trailhead near Rotary Park at 9:30am. Today’s adventure was a hike and nature scavenger hunt around Rotary Picnic Park and back for some free running and playground time. As my daughter, Madison, is only 2, I was eager to see how she would handle the adventure.

Here is the scavenger hunt Danielle prepared for us

We set off into the forest with the kids quickly finding many items on their scavenger hunt list. It was a sunshiny day with lots of shade on the trail.

So far Madison was loving it. The hike and trails were perfect for her. It was very casual in the sense that we were not being pushed to keep a certain pace but to solely enjoy our time with nature. Great for the little legs of a toddler.imageThere was lots of stopping and exploring as the kids found more items on their scavenger hunt list.

imageDanielle and her partner Kristi, did a great job of throwing games into the hike to help keep the kids interested. We arrived back at our starting point and let the kids run off their energy with a couple games of Hide n Seek and Freeze Tag. Then it was a quick play at the playground before we continued on the next part of the adventure.

We walked up Piper Mountain and enjoyed the look out over the city before we headed back down to the picnic area.

Today’s adventure gave me the confidence to know my toddler can handle short hikes and trips like this. And it reminded me that we are so lucky to have such an extensive and beautiful trail system in our backyards. It is hard to believe that downtown in a city there can be trails as beautiful as the ones Red Deer has to offer. Here is a map of the Red Deer Trails System. With more than 110km’s of hard and soft trails that traverse the Waskasoo Park System you will always be able to find a place to ride your bike, walk the dog or take a nature stroll with your family.
