This year I had the pleasure of hosting Christmas at my home. My family is spread out over the United States and Canada, so hosting means being the headquarters for the holiday season while everybody is in town. My husband, Marvin, and I had a great time as hosts and loved opening our home to family and friends.
One of the running jokes that started over the holidays was about “the list.” I try to keep my house free from as much clutter as possible, including having a naked fridge (no magnets, etc.). There is one thing posted on the side of my fridge: Marvin’s List.
Now, I’m pretty confident that I’m not the only person who has posted a to-do list for their partner. We have found that instead of me asking 15 times for the washer fluid to be re-filled, having it written down results in fewer “Why isn’t it already done?” conversations. The list is not meant to belittle my lovely husband…it’s just that he doesn’t think about all the little things to be done as much as I do. Needless to say, my family was continually adding to “the list” and mocking us at every chance possible!
I just watched the movie “I Don’t Know How She Does It” and there was a particular scene that probably rings true to many of us busy moms. The main character’s children were sleeping, but she was lying awake at 3am thinking about all the things that needed to be done. My husband was amazed that that scene probably reflects how my mind is working much of the time.
The movie provided what I thought was a very accurate reflection of the thoughts, feelings, and craziness of motherhood regardless of whether you are working outside the home or not. I was inspired to write this blog to remind Moms that sometimes doing 10,000 things at once comes very easily, and sometimes not so easily, but either way, it’s nice to give yourself a pat on the back every once and a while.
Hooray to Moms and their amazing abilities!!
