Being from Ontario, I am used to mild winters – sunny days in December and temperatures reaching above 0 more days out of the month than not. I miss having to ability to wear only a sweater and scarf out during the day. I miss snowboarding in a t-shirt and the excitement and anticipation of having a green Christmas!
Since moving to Alberta, I haven’t left the house between November-April without having a heavy coat, gloves and hat to drag around in the past six years. Now I have a child so we reqiure 2 coats, 2 hats, 2 scarves, 4 boots and 4 mittens- Sometimes it’s gets to be a bit much for a simple trip to run an errand!
BUT I have found a new appreciation for Old Man Winter this year- it’s my sons love for the snow! He is now 18 months so this is his first year to walk in, play and experience snow. We spent an hour outside together following the first big dump of the year- he had an absolute blast and was mesmerized by all that fluffly white stuff! To watch it come down, run in it, touch, fall, pick him self back up, lick his mitt, he just couldn’t get enough, and I couldn’t get enough of watching this first experience of his! I know it sounds ridiculous but I am SO excited for the next 6 months of cold, snowy Alberta weather because I’ll get to make more memories with my wonderful son!
The next best thing about spending an hour out in the snow? The hot chocolate tastes that much sweeter when you’ve earned it 🙂

My favourite winter moments with my son have been building a snowman together and playing in the backyard in the snow. We have a castle in the yard, so he can use his imagination to play “Mike the Knight”. Recently, we baked gingerbread cookies together, and that was great fun. He talked about it for days. He received a pair of skis and a helmet from his Auntie, and he has been learing to ski on the local school yard hill. Oh, and he also has a sled too. This has made the winter months so much enjoyable for our family.
