I was running around today like a mad-woman (nothing new there), and ran into a friend I hadn’t seen forever at the park with her little one.
This friend I had met right after i had our first daughter, 3 years ago. I met her at a new moms group in my community. We shared stories of leaky boobs, explosive poops and how much we loved nap times. That group of women I met in that moms group have kept in touch and although we may not see each other as often as we’d all like, we are still connected, 3 years later.
I often get asked what is one piece of advice I would give to new moms. I did a TV interview the other day, and the host asked me what I would say to a mom thinking about joining group like Mommy Connections, and why did I believe that a moms group is so important to new moms all over the city (and beyond!). My answer has been the same since I have had kids. Even if you haven’t showered in a few days and you have puke on your shoulder, there is a group of ladies who will be there at one point in their motherhood journey. GET OUT OF THE HOUSE WITH YOUR BABY! Make connections where and when you can! You’re not going to have the same parenting style or lifestyle as lots of other moms, and that’s ok. You will find your comfort zone, and your group will expand, move, shift as your babies grow! Those mommas you meet will be a lifeline and panel of sympathetic ears, ideas and comfort.
As we get ready to start celebrating the 3rd birthdays of the little guys from my first moms group, we now have a little better focus when we get together. We are able to relax a bit more and laugh at our journey. Most of us still probably have a stain of some random substance on us somewhere though, because some things never change, regardless of how old your “baby” is!
