Go Cordless
11/12/2013

Recently, Health Canada made an important announcement about corded window blinds. As caregivers and educators, it’s important you know about ordinary household items that can cause serious injuries to children.
Blind cords within reach can strangle or entangle a child. Below are a few quick facts that you should know regarding the dangers posed by corded window coverings.
Quick Facts
- Any cords on a window covering can pose a strangulation hazard.
- Since the beginning of 2003, Health Canada has received reports
of 14 fatalities, and seven potential fatalities, all related to the strangulation hazard of corded window coverings.
- Children and blind cords do not mix. The safest window coverings are ones that have no cords that you can see or touch.
- In homes where children live or visit, Health Canada recommends replacing corded window coverings with ones that are cordless, especially in children’s rooms and places where children play.
- Strangulations can happen even when children are in places where parents think they are safe, such as in a crib or in a bedroom. Never put a crib, bed, highchair, playpen, or any piece of furniture that a child may climb, near a window or patio door where there is a blind or curtain cord.
- If you cannot get rid of external blind cords, make sure the cords are up high and out of reach of children, whether coverings are up or down.
- Always follow the manufacturer’s installation and use instructions when installing window blinds.
