Simply stated dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin. This usually involves redness, itchiness, blisters, oozing, bleeding. Diaper rash, eczema, cradle cap, heat rash or prickly, psoriasis are common forms of dermatitis.
Diaper rash is mainly caused by the contents in a diaper rather than a diaper itself. Although some children are found allergic to diapers, prolonged wetness, tight diapers or frequent poops and pees and diet in some cases can trigger diaper rash causing redness and even bleeding.
Eczema and cradle cap are also common forms of dermatitis and children with eczema have a tendency to have either cradle cap, diaper rash or all 3 skin conditions at the same time.
Another common form of a skin condition is a redness around the mouth and cheeks, this can simply be caused saliva or drool from a teething baby and does not always qualify as eczema. It is however a common skin rash and can be treated with home remedies.
Heat rash or prickly heat is also commonly found this is usually due to blocked sweat glands and in children can be caused by tight clothing not allowing for circulation and thus resulting in a bumpy rash or blistered and irritated skin.
Cloth diapers are a fabulous way of controlling diaper rash. Outside of environmental factors when cloth diapers are wet, children and parents are both aware right away which calls for a change almost immediately. Disposables on the other hand have enough chemicals in them to soak up wetness right away leaving you with no idea how many times a baby may have wet his/her diaper.
Diaper rash creams are widely available and can be used to prevent diaper rash.
Corn Starch, Bentonite clay, Arrowroot powder etc. are also some alternatives that may be used to keep baby dry between diaper changes.
Adding oatmeal to a bath, natural emollients (almond oil, grape seed or olive oil) as well as some essential oils (tea tree, lavender etc.) are known to heal many forms of dermatitis.
