Halloween with little ones is magical, the tiny costumes, the excitement of knocking on doors, the first handful of candy! But as parents, we know it also comes with its own set of challenges. From unpredictable weather to sugar rushes (and the occasional toddler meltdown), a little preparation can go a long way in keeping things both fun and safe.
Here are our best tips for making your family’s Halloween night one to remember, for all the right reasons:
(see our blog post on picking the perfect costume HERE)
Comfort first: Choose costumes that are warm enough for October nights and easy to move in. Avoid anything too long or bulky that could trip them up.
Weather-ready layers: Think about how a coat or warm sweater can fit under or over the costume, especially important in Alberta!
Stay visible: Add reflective tape or glow sticks so your little one can be easily seen in the dark.
Stick to well-lit, familiar neighbourhoods where sidewalks are in good shape.
Keep the route short – especially for toddlers. A couple of blocks is often plenty before the excitement (or tired legs!) fade.
If you’re joining friends, meet up early so you’re not rushing.
Little ones often do best when you head out while it’s still a bit light out. Aim for early evening to avoid bedtime battles and keep things calmer. Park Place Mall also has indoor trick-or-treating during the day on Halloween, perfect for littles who would do better in a warm indoor setting, kids get to go store to store to “trick-or-treat” and show off their costumes!
Practice saying “Trick or Treat!” and “Thank you!” (if they are able to) it makes the night extra sweet.
Show them how to wait their turn at each door and walk (not run!) between houses.
For shy little ones, practice knocking or ringing the bell at home first.
Check treats before letting your child dive in, toss anything that’s not sealed or looks questionable.
Pack a few allergy-friendly goodies if your little one has sensitivities (and look for teal pumpkins on porches that mark allergy-aware homes).
Consider setting limits early, like a few treats tonight and the rest saved for later, to avoid tummy aches.
Pack a small bag with:
A flashlight or glow sticks
Wipes for sticky fingers
Water (all that walking makes for thirsty goblins!)
Extra mittens, hats, or a rain cover if needed
Snap a few photos before you head out while everyone’s costume is still intact. Then, put the phone away and soak in the giggles, the squeals of excitement, and the pure joy of the night.
Halloween with little ones is a short and sweet season of life. By focusing on comfort, safety, and simple fun, you’ll make memories that will last long after the candy’s gone.
Wishing you a spook-tacular and safe night of trick-or-treating!
