Kids With Allergies, Restaurants and Exceptions

09/13/2012

My daughter is allergic to peanuts. Luckily not so severely that we need an epi pen at this moment, but we still avoid them like the plague. I greatly appreciate establishments and other moms that recognize this allergy and don’t include it in the food they serve. I say thank you.

I know most places and even mom group potlucks are also quite considerate of gluten allergies. This is amazing, seeing as how it seems to be a fairly new allergy that we are adjusting to for kids.

I have friend though, who’s son is allergic to what seems like everything. The poor guy is allergic to all dairy products, nuts, gluten and I’m sure others I’m missing. I know very well that her son is not the only one that struggles with multiple allergies like this.

At the risk of being offensive to someone, I must share my thoughts. I recently saw on her status update that she was at a local place for a party. I don’t know which one, nor would I share if I did. She brought in the ever evil…….”outside food” *que scary music and screams*. She was not allowed to have it and her son couldn’t eat anything there. What is a mom to do? I understand no outside food to prevent allergic reactions. Risking all the children for ones preference is an obvious no-no. When explained he is the one with all the allergies though, I would hope there would be some understanding. Is that asking too much of an establishment, or is it crossing a line?

Are there rules that can be blurred for special cases? Are there certain places that will overlook their policy for a severe allergy such as this? Is it the responsibility of the parent to call ahead and order something special?

Do your children have allergies? Do you know accommodating places? Do you have tips for other moms, allergies or not? I’d love to hear your thoughts

Funny thing about this is my son goes to a daycare that does not cater to allergies- what this means is they are not nut/ peanut free. As my son has multiple food allergies I emailed the manger of the organization and asked her why most facilities are nut free- her response was that nuts was the only know allergy that was fatal but now the times have changed and they are looking at being allergy aware (nobody can guarantee allergy free since the allergens are hidden in clothes, toys etc ) -I think places that say no outside food need to be made aware of the increase in allergies and how alone and segregated they make children and families feel-how can I teach my child about inclusion when he is being excluded because eating, touching sometimes even breathing could cause a fatal reaction! I I only hope that he outgrows his allergies over the years to come
