Juicer Review & Contest with SPUD Edmonton

02/24/2015

When SPUD Edmonton dropped off my brand new Breville Juice Fountain Elite, I was thrilled! My daughter and I immediately began to open the box, removing the parts and prepping them to wash. With each part I washed I started to feel overwhelmed. What if I couldn’t figure out how to use it? What if I couldn’t put it together without my husband’s help? What if clean up was too complex? I finished washing the new parts and, using the instruction booklet, began to put it together. To my surprise, less than 30 seconds later, the beautiful machine was together, in all its glory.

We wasted no time making our first juice and chose a recipe from the Instruction Booklet: Apple, Carrot and Celery Juice. I quickly washed all my ingredients (and cut the apples into smaller chunks, but I’m pretty sure the machine will literary sort all of that for you) and added some ginger. We pressed the on button and began dropping carrots, celery, ginger and apples into the Feed Shoot and pushing the food down with the Food Pusher. The machine is loud (of course) and extremely powerful. It juices vegetables and fruits in what feels like nanoseconds and filters all the “unjuiceable” parts into the pulp container (on the left). In less than thirty seconds we had more than two cups of fresh juice! And my toddler’s reaction during the whole process was priceless: she squealed with delight each time we put a new fruit or veggie in the shoot. And when she tried the juice her response was “mmm yummy!”

My initial hesitation when opening the box was that it would be too complex for me to put together and would take too much time washing, drying and reassembling. Not the case at all. Once your juice is finished and you are ready to clean it’s a matter of a few minutes. I simply empty the Pulp Container (into your garbage or even better, your compost) and then rinse everything with water. That’s it. The only part that requires scrubbing (a special scrubber is provided) is the Nutri Disc which does the hard work of juicing your fruits and vegetables. I place everything in the drying rack on my counter and reassemble when everything has dried.

I’m really looking forward to spring and summer when even more BC and AB local fruits and veggies will be available through SPUD and at local farmers’ markets. I’m also excited to keep trying new juices, coming up with my own recipes and getting more comfortable (and braver) at trying new juices. If you ever have leftover juice (especially ones with vegetables) they are a great base for smoothies to replace water or other kinds of milks – especially if vegetable juices aren’t your favourite, it’s a great way to get more veggies in you!

My only warning would be that once you’ve made real, fresh organic juice, you will simply not be able to go back to the store-bought, processed kind.
