Mom Diary – Week 2

03/26/2015

So this past week started with spring and ended with winter?! What’s up with that?! I don’t really know what to expect when it comes to winter in Edmonton, it is only my second Albertan winter. But considering it snowed the day we brought our little bundle home from the hospital…September 8th…I am a bit sick of the colour white! Rant over.

So last week we met on St. Patrick’s Day, dressed in green, to hear about our babies’ personalities and how to go about looking for daycare in the city. We had a green outfit casualty after a bit of baby spit up, but there were several Moms to the rescue whipping out their green emergency reserves from their diaper bags. All was good and we got our green group picture as planned!

Edy Lambert, Personality Coach, talked to us about different personalities and how to identify traits in our babies as early as newborns. A few babes displayed some of their traits during the talk, which was of course timely and adorable! Edy reinforced to us that knowing about your child’s personality will help you on your parenting journey, as you will be better equipped to understand your child and parent your child in ways that make sense to his/her personality type. After listening to Edy I realize my daughter and I have some tough teenage years ahead of us, but hey, she’s a firey redhead true to form! Knowing is half the battle (I hope)!

A representative of Brightpath Childcare Centres came to chat with us about seeking out childcare, which many of us will need to do in the not so distant future (I can’t believe how fast mat leave goes by!! Slow down please!!). She had some great tips in relation to questions to ask, from whether or not day homes are registered to whether or not food will be provided (and how nutritious that food will be). One take home message I got from the talk was that by the time your child is 6 months old you should be looking for potential daycares/day homes before you find yourself in a situation where you are not in a position to choose the best option for your family, but have to choose the only option available. I have been on several waitlists since before my little one was born, and only knew to get myself on those lists because of suggestions from my colleagues at work. Still on the lists, I now realize I better check out some alternative options, as you can’t have too many backup plans!

After the session a few of us ventured over to Café O’Play for some java, snacks and chats. As I mentioned earlier, I am relatively new to the city, so Mommy Connections has been a great opportunity for me to meet new people. I actually got a chance to chat with a new Mom who lives approximately 5 houses down from me, which is pretty amazing! I feel lucky to not only connect with moms in the same boat as me, but in the same community (and even on the same street!). I don’t feel so lonely at 3 am when I can look out my window and see lights on down the street too!
