Along with the Ergobaby Swaddler (which we loved in case you didn’t read that review yet!), we were also lucky enough to be able to review the Ergobaby Nursing Pillow and it was another big win for Ergobaby in my mind!! Similar to our swaddling experience, the nursing pillow I received when Miss K was a baby was pretty useless and provided no support. After multiple visits to the massage therapist and the physiotherapist to fix the problems this created for my back and shoulders, I gave up, shoved it in the back of a closet and reverted to just holding her to nurse or stacking a bunch of pillows around me each time – neither method overly convenient or good to prevent slouching! The point of this back story is to show that, like swaddlers, I had completely given up on nursing pillows until now. Enter the Ergobaby Nursing Pillow. Everything about it is easy, convenient and clearly developed through talking with experts – ie. Moms and lactation consultants!
Let’s begin with shape and size: it has a really cool contour shape which is sloped to the inside so that baby is easily positioned in the tummy-to-tummy position and baby’s head is higher than his body. For someone like Mr. J, this has been great because he is a guzzler and tends to choke himself from drinking too fast. With his head positioned above his body, I have found that he is choking much less than normal! The height of the pillow is great too because I literally can sit straight with no slouching and my back is much happier about this! The pillow is C-shaped so it curves around your body so you have an arm rest on each side, which is a fantastic feature to help you relax your shoulders if you tend to carry tension there like I do.
Next the materials: it’s made up of a firm foam which means everything stays where it’s supposed to (ie. Baby doesn’t sink down to a lower level in the pillow) and it maintains its shape. The cover where baby lays is super soft and comfortable and, more importantly, the cover comes off and is machine washable. There’s also an interior lining to help protect against spills if you have a super messy eater like I do!
The Ergobaby Nursing Pillow is one that I would absolutely recommend to anyone in the market for a good, supportive nursing pillow and I’m definitely not alone in this recommendation because this pillow received the 2015 Innovation Award, which is voted by thousands of parents! The price online is $70 USD ($95 CAD right now), which may seem a bit steep for ‘just a pillow’ but anyone who knows the back and shoulder pain of nursing a baby without support will tell you a great pillow is worth every penny, and this is a great pillow! (Not only that but it’s cheaper than all the massages that will be needed if you don’t use a great pillow!!).
