Our Caribbean honeymoon

05/10/2013

We waited a week after our wedding to go on our honeymoon to give us a chance to recoup from the wedding.  We decided to go on a 5 day eastern Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Destiny ship.  I should also mention that this was our first trip together and my husbands first time on a plane!  The ship ported out of Miami and had 3 ports of call:  Nassau Bahamas, Half Moon Cay, Bahamas and Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos.

Our first port was Nassau, Bahamas.  We had bought excursion tickets to go to Atlantis, also known as Paradise Island.  Our excursion included a visit with the dolphins and access to their water park.  Unfortunately, our ship docked a little bit late, so we didn’t get to see the dolphins 🙁  Our favourite part of Atlantis was their private beach.  It was beautiful and had nice waves that day.  It was my first time in the ocean!

The next port was Half Moon Cay, Bahamas.  This is a private island and can only be accessed by cruise ships.  Here we did a horseback riding excursion.  I had envisions of frolicking in the ocean, but that’s not what is was.  I got the horse that decided to follow too closely and kept getting kicked.  I couldn’t control the horse and he knew it!  One thing I found exciting about this island, was that they had a Bell bar.  Bell being my new married name 🙂

The last port was Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos.  We weren’t having much luck with the excursions, so we decided to just enjoy the island.  We browsed the shops and enjoyed the beach.

The last day on the ship, was just a day at sea.  I think my husband enjoyed the ship more than the ports.  The food was amazing!  You could have as much as you want, whenever you wanted and it was good quality food.  Not typical buffet food.  They had everything you can think of around the clock!  At the seated dinner you could pick more than one option as well, which of course my husband did (he is a big eater).  I always finished my dinner with their famous chocolate lava cake 🙂  The service was amazing.  We had the same servers every night and they always remembered what you liked.  They would even provide little entertainment during dinner like singing and dancing.  I think we were eating 5 meals by the end of it: breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, midnight snack.

The ship also had a spa, mini golf course, pool, hot tub, water slide, art gallery, shops, casino, movie theatre on the deck, comedy club, theatre… enough that you would never have to leave the ship.  I enjoyed all the shows and on board activities.  We would love to go on a cruise again someday.  They have one out of New York to Eastern Canada.  I think that would be a good one!
