Summer Activities: Sensory Exploration
08/25/2017

Sensory exploration is important to children as they learn through smell, touch, sight, hearing and taste. This is something simple to incorporate into the home and at any age. Simply exposing your children to the feel of grass, dirt, water, sand, etc. This would be an example of learning through touch. To incorporate this into our homes we can do the following:
- Put sponges in the water table. This will allow children to feel different textures within the water and experience the sensory touch of water.
- Sniffing different herbs and flowers. Children are able to smell different scents picking out which ones they like and don’t like. This is a simple way to incorporate while cooking and getting the children involved.
- Creating a homemade garden in your backyard or in a window planter. This gets children involved in the planting, watering, and growing process of our foods. They are able to use touch to explore our world and the things that grow.
- Lemon water play. This is a great way to incorporate taste, smell and touch as they are exploring cut up lemons, squishing and smelling them.
