Connecting to Nature

05/31/2018

Nature is all around us, on the ground, in the sky, and even in your homes. Building a connection with nature can help not only us but our children realize the importance and beauty of nature. One thing I love to do this time of year is watching the birds and listen to the wind outside.

Birds love to feed on seeds, anything they can get their beaks on. That’s why I love watching them. They flutter through the sky, landing on trees, bushes, and the ground to feed and quench their thirst. Observing their interaction, I thought it would be fun to create homemade birdfeeders. Now, this can be done in a variety of ways, but I myself prefer to keep the materials as natural as can be given we’ll be placing these on our trees for the birds to enjoy.

For the birds, I always use peanut butter as a coating to ensure the seeds stick to the base of the feeder. I understand that peanut butter cannot always be used, but a great substitution is Wow Butter, a product that tastes and feels just like peanut butter (You can buy it at your local grocery store). For the base of the feeder I use pine cones, but toilet paper rolls work too. Once the materials have been gathered, (pine cones, peanut butter, bird seed, and string) you can start creating your birdfeeder and watch the birds feast upon the food source you provided!
