How to choose a real estate professional to sell your home

It can be difficult to choose the right real estate professional to handle to sale of your home. You may be very emotionally attached to your home, you may have a set dollar amount you want to get from the sale or you may have tried to sell your home without the help of a REALTOR®. I will attempt to share some information here to help you in your decision making.

The most important thing to know is that the professional you choose is someone you must be able to trust. You must believe that they are giving you truthful information on the value of your home from the start. You must trust that they will work on your behalf during the process and always be mindful of your best interests. Unfortunately not everyone is honest and trustworthy, ask your friends and family and trust your “gut”.

Ask questions. Don’t ever be afraid to ask your professional questions and keep asking until you are satisfied. Find out how they came to the price they are suggesting, what comparables they used and get more than one comparative market analysis (CMA). A good way to interview prospective REALTORS® is to have 2 or 3 come and do CMA’s for you along with their listing presentation. Be wary of values that are very far apart, too high or too low. During this process you can find out how they plan to market your home, if and how many open houses they are prepared to host and generally how you feel about them.

Another important thing to know is that if you are ever given a form that doesn’t have the ASR logo on it, for Association of Saskatchewan REALTORS®, please be very careful and read every word. If a form does not have the ASR logo there may be something hidden in the contract that may not be in your best interest.
