Thank You to All The Registered Nurses

10/02/2018

Did you know that a Registered Nurse (RN) can greatly reduce the rates of complications during childbirth?

When I was in labour with our second it was a long labour. Regular/steady contractions started Wednesday evening and we went to the hospital Saturday around 1 am. We were so fortunate to have an amazing RN who stayed with us throughout my labour. She was very supportive and knowledgeable about childbirth (our doctor even told the resident doctor to ask the RN any questions as they have been through all types of births, and the resident had not). It made my husband and I feel comfortable and well taken care of in a situation that can be very overwhelming!

My first birth had been a C-section so we were really hoping for a V-BAC. Because it was a V-BAC there were extra pre-cautions and monitoring that happened during my labour and our RN was so great with explaining to us what was happening and why. She also knew it was important to us to try for a V-BAC and was very supportive of us and helped us achieve our goal. I always felt like I was in good hands and I never worried about the safety of me or my daughter as I knew we were receiving the best possible care with her by our side.

RN’s are highly skilled professionals who are trained to handle all types of deliveries – from uncomplicated to many possible complications. We are so fortunate to have so many high skilled registered nurses in our hospitals and care centres.

With our second we were back home about 12 hours after her birth and the RN’s from Healthy and Home came to our house the next day to do the heel-prick test and ensure baby and I were both doing well. We are so fortunate here in Saskatoon to have these highly trained professionals that will come to our house and check on us and baby.

Fast forward to a few years later when my youngest was about 1.5 years old. She had spent the day with dad and grandma. My husband calls me to tell me that Iz had had a seizure, so I met him at the hospital. Such a scary moment in my life. We were again lucky to have 2 amazing RN’s and a student nurse who cared after our daughter. They were patient with her as she did not like the IV’s, needles and everything else that was involved. We had lots of questions and the RN’s were able to hep explain everything to us. I always felt like we were receiving the best care possible for our daughter. Luckily Iz was ok, she continued to have some absent seizures over the next year, but she has since outgrown them.

RN’s have such a critical role within the health care system by providing expert care to so many patients. I’m so glad that in the times our family has needed help that we have been supported and cared for by some amazing RNs.

My mom and both my sister’s in law are Registered Nurses – all of which currently or previously worked on pediatrics. I’m sure all 3 of them are tired of my husband and I texting and calling them with questions about our daughters!
