Fave 5 Places To Go In The City During Winter
02/26/2019
My name is Erin. I’m a toddler mom and a pup mom. I had my son in May of 2016. Becoming a mom was the scariest thing I’ve ever done, and I have loved every moment of it. I am a stay at home writing mom. I write everyday after my son goes to bed. My partner occasionally works away from home. When he’s home, we spend as much family time together as possible, and when he’s gone, I practice my Solo Mom Life. Life isn’t always easy, but I try to be as grateful as I can. My son helps with that. You can find my blog at thewritingmomma.ca or follow me on Instagram and Facebook at thewritingmommalife
It’s so cold out. Again. I’m writing this from a warm coffee shop, and I am finally making time to write about my five favourite indoor places to go with my kiddo during the winter. (Although, they’re good to go to any season.)
These are my personal favourites. Getting out of the house isn’t always easy, but it gets necessary to stop you from going stir-crazy.
- Libraries: This is one of the best things to do with your kiddo. It’s even better because it is free. There are a lot of pricy activities for kids in the city. This one doesn’t cost a thing. It also includes learning and books. Every Saskatoon Public library has a kid’s area. Every library has story time or songs. We actually don’t do the story time as much, but we do go to the libraries. There are so many things to do there. They have toys, puzzles, and books. They have places to read to your kids. They are full of wonderful resources. Also, sometimes, you can read while your child plays. That’s a win. (Did I mention it’s free?)
- SSCI indoor playgroup: The Henk Ruys Soccer Centre in Lawson Heights runs a playgroup from 9:30 to 11:45 from Monday to Friday. They have two fields open full of toys for your kids. They have a row of chairs in the middle for the parents to sit. This separates the ride on toys from the smaller toys. It’s five dollars for one child, and one dollar for each additional kid. It’s a great deal. They also have punch cards, monthly passes, and season passes available. This is a wonderful way for your toddler to run off some energy. It gets you out of the house, you can watch them have a blast, drink some coffee, and chat with a friend. My son is still working on independent play, so he often times ends up bringing toys over to me, but he still loves it, and I love getting out of the house. At about 11:30, the parents who are still there all help in the cleaning up process. I love this idea because it also gives my son a chance to help clean up. If I’m lucky, my son naps on the way home, and we’re all very happy.
- Learn And Play Cafe: This is one of my favourite places. Both my son and I love it. In fact, when he sees the outside of it, he knows we are there to play. It is $7.50 for 18 months and older. Parents don’t pay. They have food and drinks available to purchase for both kids and adults. The entry fee allows your kids to play with the toys. They always have a sensory bin out with different things for your child to explore. They have story time and crafts twice a day. The people who run it and work there are fantastic. I love talking to them, and seeing how much my son loves them. They also have holiday themed days.
- Malls: To be more specific: our favourites are Lawson Heights and Market Mall. Both these malls have a play area for your kiddos. Once again, this is free (other than shopping and food). Lawson Heights has two different play areas set up, and my kiddo loves them both. They are open the same times as the mall. We spend more time in Lawson than any other mall specifically because of the amazing resources they have for kids and moms.
- Western Development Museum: I don’t take advantage of this one as much as I’d like, but it’s a wonderful place for tots to get rid of some energy, as well as a chance to see new things. This one is 12 dollars for adults, and free for preschool aged kids. It’s 27 dollars for a family. I have fond memories of going when I was a child, and I love seeing how much Anthony enjoys it when he visits. There are so many great things to explore. It’s great for all ages, and I’ll be able to continue taking him as he gets older because there will always be something to discover.
There are obviously so many other places that I could write about. Saskatoon is pretty great for things to do with your kids. These are my top five.
