Nicole Betker is a mother, wife, rabid Toronto Blue Jays fan and a pop culture junkie. Always having an opinion or something to say, it’s time this journalism grad found a place to share her musings on the acts of “adulting”.

Kindness is a simple word and a simple sentiment that is needed more than ever in our world today.

At the root of every lesson I want to share with my sons is kindness. Saying thank you, being nice to other kids at the playground, not being a bully, giving a Valentine, calling grandparents or sharing is all connected to being kind. To me, it is the foundation of how we should treat and act toward each other.

Unfortunately, at times, especially during this current pandemic, this message has been lost. The easiest emotion to feel and express is anger. I’m guilty of it and I’m sure you have been too. In those moments, we need to dig deep and find our kindness – at the grocery store, in the cold, at the doctor office, with new rules and regulations that sometimes do not make sense, with a scary and long-lasting pandemic or with the person on social media. Simply, find kindness and pass it on to others.

It might be naive or simplistic but if we were all a little more kind, the world would truly be a better place.

Recently, I told a colleague that if I could sum up my parenting style it would be found in the lyrics to Tim McGraw’s Humble and Kind, particularly these snippets:

Hold the door, say please, say thank you
Don’t steal, don’t cheat, and don’t lie
I know you got mountains to climb but
Always stay humble and kind

When the dreams you’re dreamin’ come to you
When the work you put in is realized
Let yourself feel the pride but
Always stay humble and kind

Don’t expect a free ride from no one
Don’t hold a grudge or a chip
and here’s why
Bitterness keeps you from flying
Always stay humble and kind

When you get where you’re goin’
Don’t forget turn back around
And help the next one in line
Always stay humble and kind

If we all tried to attain and strive to feel and be kind with our actions, we’d be happier as people, as parents, as friends, as family members and so would our world. We would also be creating a generation that, hopefully, develops and grows to be strong leaders who are accepting of each other’s differences and beliefs.

It is what I hope for future for not just my kids but also everyone. And I hope you do too.
