Outdoor Activity- Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt is the perfect activity to encourage outdoor exploration with little ones. This activity gamifies your little ones experience outside which helps to keep them engaged as they view everything around them.

This is an easy activity you can prepare or have your little ones prepare with you. Here are some of my tips for preparing a outdoor scavenger hunt.

* Note: this activity is not limited to outdoors. You can also use this as a fun indoor activity. There is lots of versatility with this activity.

Step One:

Choose the theme of your scavenger hunt and what the items will need to be found. Since I am focusing on outdoors, some themes could be:

• Colors in Nature
• Animals and/or Plants
• Forest, Beach, Park, or On the Road

Step Two:

Once you have decided on your theme, make the choice of how you will present the list of items which your little ones will find. You can present your list in some of the following ways:

• List the items using only words or describe item in a sentence
• List items with words and pictures
• List items using pictures only

Step Three: 

Prepare the scavenger hunt list which you will provide to your little ones. There are many ways, and again you can decide how creative you would like to  get with the presentation of your list. Here are some ideas of tools to use to prepare your list:

• You can use Microsoft Word and list the names all your hunt items
• You can use Microsoft Word and insert a table where you can insert images into each box, and checkbox next to each of the items
• You can also find images in magazines or newspapers, then cut and paste to a piece of paper
• You can last but not least simply write out a list of items to be found. If you’re artsy, you can even draw images to go along with each item.

The great thing about scavenger hunts is you can get creative with making them less challenging for smaller kiddos or a bit more challenging for your older kids. The most important thing is it creates a fun way for kids to explore their surroundings.
