OVERwhelmed by Bath Time!

04/07/2013

Looking back at our early stages of parenting, fewer things had us more OVERWhelmed than bathing our new baby girl.

I very clearly remember standing in the hospital, watching the nurse give our newborn a bath and paying close attention. I was taking mental notes of the instructions she was giving me. Our little Lilly was looking around, pretty quiet while it all took place and I thought to myself, “I can do this.”
I was wrong.

2 days later we are at home and attempting our first baby bath on our own and realizing that bathing a newborn is so. much. harder. than the nurse made it look.

Obviously not a highlight in life for anyone involved…

Lilly screamed so hard that she was red and shaking. My heart broke watching her and the feeling that I was traumatizing my child started to sink in. It was the first time that I truly felt completelyOVERWhelmed as a new parent.

Every bath time we went though to same battle. Bathing was quickly deemed a two person job – one person to bathe the screaming infant while the other held her still. It sucked. As a result, bath time became the thing that both my husband and I dreaded the most.

This went on for nearly 6 weeks before my own mother, being older and wiser in this parenting business, decided to try something else. She had the idea of taking Lilly into the big bath tub. She did it as a quick test, to see if it was the water, or the surroundings that had the baby so distraught.

The result was a very large win.

From there on out we bathed Lilly in the large bath. If we were both home, one of us would get in with her and hold her. If my husband was at work, I used her baby bath inside the big tub.

After a few months, bath time moved up the ranks to being one of the honest joyful moments in parenting. Lilly even first associated the excited term “yeah” with hearing the running water in the tub.

Do you remember what it was like to have those OVERwhelmedOVERjoyedOVERtired or evenOVERdue moments as a new or expectant parent? Fisher-Price is running a great contest to give parents the chance to share their Million Moments of Joy.

Drop by and share your photos or videos that show the sweet, adorable and even the exhausting moments we feel as parenting. The contest launched on March 5th, with a prize pack being given away each week for 8 weeks.

The awsome prize packs are:

  • My Little Snugabunny™ Bouncer ($89.99 CAD)
  • Laugh & Learn™ Dance & Play Puppy ($59.99 CAD)
  • Ocean Wonders™ Aquarium ($54.99 CAD)

I absolutely love the theme of this contest and was thrilled to be a part of it. For anyone who comes here often, you know that I blog honestly about many tender moment in the world of motherhood…but I also share many hair-pulling ones.

It makes me smile that we live in a point in time where parents can share both the rewards and challenges of raising children, so openly with one another. Ideally, we can learn…and laugh…with each other in equal measure.
