Mother’s Day Gift (to ourselves!)

05/13/2013

‘Mom time’ ‘Me time’ ‘Time out’ ‘Balance’. Whatever you want to call it, we all know it’s good for us, essential even, but how earth do we get it? And when we do, how do we stop ourselves from feeling guilty about it?

Sorry, I only seem to have questions, not answers! I am definitely a very poor example and know that I don’t practise what I preach. But how about this Mother’s Day we let go of past attempts that maybe didn’t work out so well and start afresh. Maybe the little special time we get on Mother’s Day will remind us how valuable it is, not just to us, but for the whole family.

I have recently been set on the correct path again by the wonderful staff at Visions Salon and Spa (www.visionssalonandspa.com) I had not been to the hairdressers for 6 months, which is a record even for me, when they came to my rescue. Not only did they give me a new cut and colour, but they also manicured my poor, dried out from the SK winter, hands and gave me the most amazing eyelash extensions. Not only did all these treatments necessitate me to sit or lay still for significant amounts of time, a treat in itself, but they reminded me that I am worth taking care of. And possibly most important of all, they made it a lot easier for me to take care of myself from then on!

My hair stylist, Joy, listened carefully to my requirements. I’m sure she’s heard them often before ie that I wanted something fabulous, but that suited me (age, coloring, face shape etc) and most importantly was easy to maintain. Always a tall order but she did not disappoint. I now have a very practical, yet pretty funky (IMO) style, with beautiful colors, that use the latest methods to ease the pain of regrowth!! Just in case I fall off the wagon again and don’t get back to see her as regularly as I hope. But for now, the grey is all gone again and I am very happy about that.

Then Eva worked her magic on my eyelashes. Now this is a long job, so it does necessitate laying down for quite some time. Oh the hardship! You can even nap if the mood takes you. And when the work is done, holey moley, what a transformation. It is truly amazing what eyelashes do for you. You can look bright eyed and bushy tailed every morning, no matter how many times your little darlings have had you up in the night – with no risk of smudging mascara!

Finally it was time for my hands. My poor weather beaten, central heating dried out, frequently washed and forgotten to moisturise hands. I’ve always believed that hands give away a woman’s true age, and mine are no exception. But after some gentle soaking, filing, polishing and moisturising, I had lost a good few years again and felt like I could stroke my little one’s beautiful skin with causing a graze!!

And talking of little ones, one of the main reasons I choose Visions Salon and Spa over others, apart from the talented staff, is their all natural organic products. As soon as I became pregnant I became more conscious of what I was putting in and on my body, and this only increased once my child arrived. So I was very happy to find this locally based business that develops their own products, ‘Surface’.

It can be difficult to take big chunks of time out for oneself, so little and often is going to be my new motto, which will hopefully help me feel better about myself and keep me re energised without any unnecessary guilt. Feel free to check up on me!
