Getting FUNKY With Cloth Diapers – A Review By A Local Cloth Diapering Newbie

Mehreen copyLooking at me you would likely never guess it. I’m a total crunchy granola mommy in disguise. This wasn’t always the case. In fact, before becoming pregnant with my first daughter in 2010, I was the anti-hippy (the more chemicals the better!). But pregnancy changed me and I became VERY aware (read: obsessed…just ask my husband) of all the harmful chemicals out there and the potential dangers.

Now a mother of two, I would like to think I am raising my girls as ‘natural” as I can. I have always made all their food fresh at home with organic ingredients; I use organic coconut oil as moisturizer and hutted high and low for the most natural baby shampoo and body wash I could find. Whenever possible I don’t use diaper wipes, instead I opt to wash baby’s bum under sink. But there has been one thing I was never able to let go of: The disposable diaper.

The prospect of cloth diapering was extremely daunting and despite other mommy’s telling me it isn’t as hard as I may think, I just could not get myself to take the plunge. So when I had the opportunity to try out “Funky Fluff” cloth diapers, I jumped at the chance.  Included in my starter kit was the following:StarterKit__16440.1359076182.300.300

–        One Size fits all Bamboo Fusion Cloth Diaper

–        One Stay Dry Fusion Cloth Diaper

–        Both include a heavy snap in soaker & a light snap in soaker

–        A Funky Fluff wet bag

Alright, confession time- I cheated a little. When I started my now almost 7 month old on solids, she became a little constipated. Why this overshare of information? Well I chose this time to start using the funky Fluff diapers as I thought it would help ease the transition if I was mainly dealing with wet diapers only.

First let’s talk about the important stuff….esthetics! These diapers are super cute! Not at all what I had in mind when you think “cloth diapers”. In fact, my husband had no idea they were cloth diapers! Take a look on their website: funkyfluff.ca and you will see what I mean! They come in such fun colors and patterns…super chic…or I guess I should say, funky!

Okay, so how did it go? Honestly, not bad! The first few diapers I had to deal with were wet only. This proved to be super easy to deal with, even as a first time cloth diapering mama. I just switched out the liner and I was good to go. The fit on these diapers are great! IT has this double elastic design that allows the diaper to hug the baby to avoid any leaks.  Then, it happened. I had to deal with my first “poo”! As mentioned, since my daughter was a bit constipated, her poo was more solid than normal (you are welcome for that visual) which was great news for me because it was super easy to take care of! I literally just dumped the poo in the toilet and threw the liner in the wash after a quick rinse.

I didn’t find the diapers as bulky as I had anticipated. The thicker soaker adds some bulk, but I only used that overnight so the extra bulk wasn’t an issue and my daughter didn’t seem to mind either. Also, I’m happy to report she woke up dry! Yay!

I have to say, I am 100% obsessed with the wet bag! It has two pockets so that you can keep clean clothes or diapers on one side, and soiled ones on the other this had become a staple in my diaper bag! Definitely beats plastic bags!

So, the million dollar question: will I be switching to cloth diapering? Yes and No. I think ultimately what I have decided is to do a combination of both. While our two and a half year old is potty trained she still needs diapers for nap time and overnight. I have decided to try to stop using disposables on her and use cloth diapers during sleep time. On our 7 month old I would like to try to use the cloth diapers overnight since its 12 hours straight I can avoid having the disposable diaper against her skin. I’m so happy I tried out Funky Fluff! It forced me to take the cloth diapering plunge and ultimately helped us decide to reduce the amount of disposables we will be using on our girls!
