How To Manage Candy Overload At Halloween – The Switch Witch!

10/30/2014

As a lot of you may know, we’ve had some serious battles with the effect of sugar on my little man’s teeth.  Halloween is one of his most favourite times of year, no doubt because of all of the candy he can collect.  In an attempt to seek out advice on how to rid our house of all of that candy without causing major meltdowns, I came across the idea of The Switch Witch.  Urban legend says that if you leave out all of your candy (or most of it!) after collecting it Halloween night, she will swoop in with her hungry cat and swap it for a toy while your little one sleeps.  We tried it for the first time last year, leaving this poem at the end of his bed the night before Halloween.

It worked like a charm!

He happily parted with his candy Halloween night, and was thrilled to see a Lego set at the foot of his bed the next morning.

All year he has been creating a wish list – not just for Santa – but for the Switch Witch to bring him!  As his attachment to candy grows (you always want what you can’t have, right?!) we’ve had to up our game.  The new Disney Infinity game has been hiding in our garage for a few weeks.  Here’s this year’s letter for you to copy and past or tweak to make it your own!

Have you heard about the Switch Witch?

I’m hungry, fierce and fat!

I’m on the hunt for candy

To feed my naughty cat!

He likes all of your chocolate

The green chews and the blue

And if you have some bubblegum

He’ll really want that too!

After trick or treating

Pick out 15 things to keep

And then put in a bucket

Sweets to swap while you’re asleep!

Only when you’re snoozing

The Switch Witch will drop in

I’ll take out all of the candy

And who knows what I’ll put in?

My kitty wants your candy

It doesn’t matter the size or the name

And when you wake in the morning

Watch out for the Disney Infinity Game!

Happy Switching!!

Note:  I found the idea via google images, and don’t know who to credit for the original idea.  I have now seen various versions including a book!
