For as long as I can remember, my son has wanted to be a “rock star scientist” when he grows up. He also really wants to be a youtube star…who knew that was now an official career?!
We have incorporated music throughout his life, including 3 years of Fun With Music Together as a baby and toddler. Once he hit school age, we were excited to introduce him to real musical instruments. Thanks to Grandma and Grandpa, we have a very LOUD drum set, but I had something a little more peaceful in mind 😉 We decided to seek out guitar lessons, and Neighbour Note has been the perfect fit for our family. Here are 6 reasons why:
1. They come to your home. I could stop the list right here. You can’t beat the convenience of having an instructor come to you. No rushing around, fighting about being late. No braving snow storms and full parking lots. Students are way more comfortable in the privacy and security of their home. They are more relaxed and perform better. Not to mention the fact that it frees up 30 minutes for me to make dinner while listening to my son’s adorable voice.
2. They teach the music your child wants to play. I remember the monotony of my childhood piano lessons, and repeating scales over and over again. I know that style of lesson works really well for some children, but for my high energy child, that just doesn’t work. Instead, he got to email our instructor his favourite songs, and that is what he has been learning. I dare you not to smile when you see his list:
· Thriller – Michael Jackson
· Yellow Submarine – The Beatles
· Back in Black – AC/DC
· Eye of the Tiger – Survivor
· Seven Nation Army – The White Stripes
· Master of Puppets and Blackened – Metallica
3. The instructors are amazing. Tim is young, enthusiastic, and very patient. He plays in his own band, which means my son idolized him from the start. After the first couple weeks, my son decided that he was going to write his own song called “Kitty in a UFO”. He was so excited to play it for Tim when he came for the lesson. Instead of listening and getting back to the lesson, Tim decided to turn that “Kitty in a UFO” into a lesson and helped Charlie write and play chords for it, and then played backup while Charlie perfected his song.

4. They teach adults as well! After my son’s lesson, it’s my husband’s turn. Over the years he has tried guitar lessons, but has never really stuck with it. His previous lessons were just about finger exercises and boring theory. With Neighbour Note he is still learning these important lessons, but via the rock and roll songs that he knows and loves. Tim very easily switches hats from teaching a 7 year old to helping a 41 year old hang on to his rock and roll dream.

5. They offer a free 30 minute in home assessment to make sure their program is the right fit for you and the instructor is connecting with your child.
6. They have a friendly administrator that keeps everything organized and running smoothly – so that the teachers can focus on what they do best – TEACH.
Owned by a Bloor West family, the goal of Neighbour Note is to instill a love of music in all of their students. Check out their weekly lessons or camp programs. We’ll see you this Summer at their Little Rockers Band Camp!
